Curly Hair Journey & Treasure Tress
Where’s all my curly girls at?
So if you’re like me, a natural curly girl you know at times it’s not always easy to find the right products for your hair.
Living in the UK I’ve not always been able to find the product I want or need for my hair type.
When I first started wearing my hair curly/natural life wasn’t always that easy, back then you couldn’t just run to Boots or Superdrug and be like I have this.
I would have to go out of my area to a PAK store or just order online, which at times was costly, but now boots and Superdrug are catching on that we are a market they can make money from.
Relaxing My Hair
For years I used to relax my hair as I just didn’t know any other way to care for it. I guess it did not help that my mum was also clueless when it came to my type of hair.
She did try, bless her, but the easy thing to do was to relax my hair. My mum is mixed race and has totally different hair to me.
So from my early teen’s I’d get my hair relaxed 3 to 4 times a year, I could go that long without doing it as my hair can be easily blow dried and straightened to bone straight.
Why I Went Natual
A lot of the time I see other curly/natural girls talking about what inspired them to go natural and then there’s me I wasn’t’ inspired by someone or something.
I wanted to prove a point, sad but true.
Long story short, I had a friend who worked for Vidal Sassoon so I used to get free cuts & colour.
One day I went for my usual cut and colour when one of the stylists asked me the last time I’d relaxed my hair I said about 5 months go which he replied with “You wish”.
He went on to tell me that my kind of hair would not be so straight if it hadn’t been relaxed in such a long time and how it would fallen out by now.
Basically, he was calling me a liar.
So I guess the I don’t like to be told what I can or can’t do woke up and was like really, let me prove you wrong and from that day onwards I never put anything onto my hair to straighten it
Yes, I wanted to prove him wrong & I did although I never saw this him again.
The Horror Stories
Once you tell people you’re going natural be prepared for the horror stories, everyone knows someone who’s gone natural and how it was such a bad experience.
For me it was so simple, my hair did not fall out, I didn’t have any nightmare stages where my hair looked crazy
In fact, my hair pretty much looked the same as it did before I stopped relaxing it as I’d always been able to make my hair go curly it just became easier to do.
I still wear my hair straight at times it just takes more work than before.
Over the years I have tried so many hair products some good and some bad, I’ve watched hours and I mean hours of YouTube videos for the best products, the best way to wash and style my hair, you name it I’ve tried it
My bathroom shelves are full of all different products. us curly girls are always on the hunt for that one product that gives our hair life
Us curly girls are always on the hunt for that one product that gives our hair life.
What I’ve come to realise, each curly girl has her own journey and no two journeys are the same what works for me may not work for you
I used to see curly girls whose hair would look amazing and I’d be like what products are you using I would go out and buy them and my hair would not be having it.
I must admit I do spend a lot of money on hair products and I’m always on the look out new products.
Last month while on Instagram looking at curly hair I came across Treasure Tress
